Childish Gambino - The Worst Guys (ft. Chance The Rapper)
I’ve been following Donald Glover’s hip-hop career ever since he first started releasing music a few years ago. I’ve never been what I would consider a “fan”, but I still have all of his albums and mixtapes. He’s never released anything that’s really blown me away and had me clambering back for more. I enjoy his work for the most part, but I feel he regularly fails to showcase his full potential, even when he clearly puts out a lot of effort. This is painfully evident with his 2012 mixtape Royalty, since it could’ve easily been one of the best releases of the year given it was overflowing with top notch features, such as ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Bun B, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Danny Brown, Beck, Chance The Rapper, and more. Overall Royalty is a solid release, but it’s a very far cry from realizing the quality it could’ve achieved and what I was hoping for.
I have similar sentiments towards his new sophomore album Because The Internet, but Glover has noticeably refined his sound more than any of his previous releases. He’s also surprisingly much more oriented towards a prominent RnB/Soul vibe throughout many of the songs. The significant amount of dreamy singing actually provides some really pleasant variation; however, at times it seems almost forced.
The Worst Guys is possibly my favorite song off of Because The Internet. I was assuming Chance The Rapper would deliver some kind of singing or at least a knockout verse, but he simply provides a straightforward five word supporting chorus. It’s a great chorus nonetheless. I also like how on page 69 of Childish Gambino’s website it reads: all she needed was… a) a picture of the devil b) your keys c) some **** d) something to understand.
My Song Rating: 8.7 out of 10
